PROBLEMS WITH LUX PRESENTS HOLLYWOOD

by Vic Evans

Lux "The Jazz Singer" was done twice but 1936-08-10, #93 is supposed to be unavailable. It stars Al Jolson but likely NOT Gail Patrick.  Often you find #575, 1947-06-02 which stars Al Jolson & Gail Patrick wrongly labeled as #93.  If the producer is William Keighly it is just a wrongly labeled copy of #575. It must have as producer Cecil B. Demille to be #93.

#575 also has an announced next week show of "One More Tommorow" with Jane Wyman & Dennis Morgan but that show never happened. Instead the same announce stars did #576, 1947-06-09 "THE ANIMAL KINGDOM" which is unavailable.

Lux Radio Theater 1936-02-24, #69, Peter Pan with Freddy Bartholomew is supposed to be unavailable. If you find one and it stars Bobby Driscol, it a wrongly labeled copy of "PETER PAN" #861, 1953-12-21.

LUX 1936-03-02, #70, "Alias The Deacon" is supposed to be unavailable. It must have Victor Moore to be right. Often you find one labeled as #70 but it stars Bob Burns which means it actually is #270 400701

DARK VICTORY #170 380404 is available but MUST star Barbara Stanwyck, Melvyn Douglas.  GUEST PRODUCER: Edward Arnold Announcer Melvile Ruic mistakenly names the network "NBC" at the end, then corrects himself.

DARK VICTORY #245 400108 is available but MUST star Bette Davis, Spencer Tracy.  I often find copies of #245 mislabeled as #170.

LUX 511203, #768 "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" is available and stars Frank Lovejoy, Ray Milland and Ruth Roman.

Lux 540412, #877 "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" is also available but I have yet to find it. It MUST star Dana Andrews, Robert Cummings and Virginia Mayo. I often find copies of #768 mislabeled as #877.

Lux "A STAR IS BORN" was done twice and both programs are available but I often find them mislabeled.

Lux #141, 370913 must have Robert Montgomery, Janet Gaynor, Lional Stander, Mae Robson and Lou Merrill. #377, 421228 must have Judy Garland and Walter Pidgeon.

Lux "All About Eve" was done twice and both these programs are available.  However, collections often have them mislabeled.

Lux #759 (1951-10-01) "All About Eve" must have stars Bette Davis, Gary Merrill and
the next weeks program announced must be "Borderline".

Lux #899 All About Eve (1954-11-23) stars Anne Baxter, Claire Trevor Don Randolph and William Conrad.

"Dodsworth" was done twice in 1937 and both of them star Walter Huston.

Lux #128, 1937-04-12, "Dodsworth" is supposed to be unavailable but I often find
copies of #144 labeled as #128.

Lux #144, 1937-10-04 "Dodsworth" is available. It stars Walter Huston, Nan Sunderland, Barbara O'Neil, Pedro De Cordoba.  The trick to check your program is to listen near the end when they announce the program for the next week --- if it is "STELLA DALLAS" you have a copy of  #144, 1937-10-04 "Dodsworth".

Lux "Merton of the Movies" was done twice, and both of them star Mickey Rooney, but #664, the June 20, 1949 version is supposed to be unavailable. Available: "MERTON OF THE MOVIES" #326, 1941-11-17 with Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland.  Unavailable: "MERTON OF THE MOVIES" #664, 06-20-49 with Mickey Rooney, and Arlene Dahl. If your copy has Judy Garland, it is #326.

Lux "JANE EYRE" #182 06-27-1938 is supposedly unavailable. It must star Helen Hayes, Robert Montgomery to be right. Often #443 06/05/1944 or #621 14/06/1948 are mislabeled as this one.

Lux "THE LAST OF MRS. CHEYNEY" #72, 1936-03-16, with Miriam Hopkins is also supposed to be unavailable. If it has Norma Shearer or next weeks program is not "Th Song and Dance Man", it is wrong and just a mislabeled copy of Lux #351 "THE LAST OF MRS. CHEYNEY", 1942-05-11, with Norma Shearer, Walter Pidgeon, and Adolphe Menjou.

Lux "Jane Eyre" was done three times but only two versions are supposed to be available.
Lux "JANE EYRE" #182 06-27-38 is supposed to be unavailable. It must star Helen Hayes, Robert Montgomery to be right. Often Lux #443 06/05/1944 or #621 14/06/1948 are mislabeled as this one.

Watch for Lux #564, 1947-03-17, "Leave Her To Heaven". My copy only has the start of the program and the end is another distorted program.
