Warshawsky, a detective from the pen of Sara Paretsky, is featured in nine novels and numerous short stories to date. Of these novels, three, "Deadlock", "Killing Orders" and "Bitter Medicine" have been adapted for radio by the BBC. V.I. Warshawski is a female detective in modern day Chicago, assisted only by a part-time assistant Mary Louise Neely, a former Chicage cop. Victoria, or Vic, is stubborn, loyal, and won't say no to a dare; the kind of characterists that lead to trouble. Not that Vic can't handle trouble. The novels were adapted for radio in the early 1990's and stared Kathleen Turner as Warshawsky in "Killing Orders" and "Deadlock". She later played V.I. Warsharsky in the movie "V.I. Warsharsky", based on the novel "Indemnity Only", the first V.I. Warsharsky novel. In "Bitter Medicine" the lead was played by Sharon Gless. The producer for all three mini-series was Janet Witaker. Michelene Wandor was adapter for all three. Each mini-series aired on BBC Radio 4, in stereo, each in six 30- minute episodes. "Killing Orders" was broadcast on Thursdays at 11:00 PM GMT.
