T H E A D V E N T U R E S O F S H E R L O C K H O L M E S ----- ------------------- --- --------------- ----------- Ben Wright / Eric Snowden Version 1949-50 Season First Show: 09-21-49 Last Show: 06-14-50 Number Shows: 39 Audition Show: none Series Description: This was the last season of an American Sherlock Holmes radio series. After Basil Rathbone left the series at the close of the 1946 season, the series went through a number series of actors to play the parts of Holmes and Watson. Now, Ben Wright played Holmes and Eric Snowden was his Watson. Both were seasoned radio actors. In fact, Ben Wright played Watson on May 20, 1946, when Nigel Bruce was ill and Holmes on March 10, 1947 when Tom Conway was ill. This season again saw many changes, besides those of the main roles. The series move to the ABC network. The old name of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" was used. Petri Wine was back as sponsor, gone since Basil Rathbone left. Denis Green return as writer but without Anthony Boucher with whom he wrote the Sherlock Holmes scripts during the Rathbone / Bruce years. Producer and director were Ted Bliss and Ken Manson. The announcer was Herb Allen. Organist providing the musical background was Dean Fossler. The series originated from Hollywood. From September 21, 1949 to January 18, 1950, the shows could be heard on WJZ, Ney York Wednesdays from 8:30-8:55 PM. From January 25, 1950 to the season end, ther remainder of the 39 shows aired again on Wednesdays, but from 9:00-9:25 PM. Log Comments: Although I was able to get much information about the series from The University of Minnesota Special Collections / Rare Books internet web site, it listed no show titles. These came from Jerry Haendiges' log, available form his web site. Ed Carr was the only vendor I've found so far that had even a single show, Mar 22, 1950, #27, "The Duke of Hollywell".
