R A F F L E S ------------- 1985 - 1993 First Show: 20 Oct, 1985 Last Show: 17 Jan, 1993 Number Shows: 19 Audition Show: none Series Description: The Raffles stories, created by E. W. Hornung, the brother-in-law of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, concern gentleman burglar A. J. Raffles and his accomplice Bunny Manders. The short stories were first issued at the turn of the century and rivaled the popularity of Sherlock Holmes. Raffles established the prototype for the Saint, James Bond, and other gentleman/rogue types of modern fiction. Raffles appeared on film as early as 1930, played by Ronald Colman, in the film titled "Raffles". It was remade in 1940, staring David Niven. In the US, THE ADVENTURES OF RAFFLES was heard in the early 1940's on CBS. Originally, it started as a weekly 30-minute sustained series but became a daily 15-minute serial in 1943. An audition show was created for another Raffles US radio series on August 23, 1945, but was never made. Only a few of the shows survived. The audition is available. In the UK, Raffles made it to TV for series in 1975 and 1977. The BBC finally brought Raffles, staring Jeremy Clyde, and his partner in crime, Bunny, played by Michael Cochrane, to radio in 1985. Besides this series of six 30-minute shows, the duo would go on to portrait the main characters in two more series in 1988 and 1992. They also did a single 60-minute show for the Play of the Week on BBC Radio 4. All shows were BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service co-productions. The scripts for Series 1 and 2 were adapted by David Buck. Scripts for Series 3 adapted by Olwen Wymark. The script for the single 60- minute show was adapted by Gordon House. All shows were directed by Gordon House. Theme music for all shows was written by Jim Parker.
