HORIZONS WEST -------- ---- By: "Stewart Wright" Last Updated: 12/22/2001 Date of initial airing is unknown; this was a syndicated series. NOTE: A posting by Jay Ranellucci in The Old-Time Radio Digest Volume 2001: Issue 300, Monday, 10 Sep 2001, gives a general time frame for the recording of the series. ". . .around 1962 or 1963 when "Horizons West" was recorded in studio "B" at Capitol Records in Hollywood. I was privileged to have been one of the engineers on that series of 13 episodes." Audition Show: none SERIES DESCRIPTION: Thirteen chapter syndicated radio docu-drama of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Excellent scripts and acting. Produced for and broadcast on Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. CREW: Directed by William Lally. Written by Karl A. and William Tunberg. Sound patterns by Gene Twombly. Announcer: Michael Rye (a.k.a. Rye Billsbury.) NOTES: Whenever possible, the spelling of character names were verified using standard reference works on The Lewis and Clark Expedition. During much of the 20th Century the name of Lewis's dog has been a point of conjecture among scholars. In 1916, the dog's name, Seaman, through a historian's error in interpreting the expedition's participants handwriting and variable spelling of names in their written manuscript journals, resulted in the erroneous name, Scannon. It was not until 1987 when the late Donald Jackson, a noted research historian, published his findings in his "Among the Sleeping Giants" that the dog's name was proved rightly to be Seaman. I was told by Harry Bartell that the actor who played Scannon (Seaman), among other roles, was Dal McKennon. LOG: MR.
