T H E H A L L O F F A N T A S Y ----- ------- --- ------------- 1946-1947, 1949-1952, 1952, 1953 First Show: ??? ??, 1946 Last Show: Sep 28, 1953 Number Shows: 183 Audition Show: not known Series Description: There were four series under the HALL OF FANTASY banner, all produced by Richard Thorne. The first HALL OF FANTASY originated from radio station KALL in Salt Lake City, Utah. Richard Thorne and Carl Greyson were announcers for the station and produced the rather barebones shows, possibly late in 1946 and into 1947. The series consisted of 26 shows. Broadcast dates for the shows are not known. The shows were written or adapted by Robert Olson and directed by Mr. Thorne. Most were classic murder mysteries with traditional endings; the evil-doer got his just rewards. The series was sponsored by the Granite Furniture Company, although existing shows are missing the commercials, apparently because they were inserted live. Only six shows from this series are know to exist at this time. It ended when Mr. Thorne and Mr. Greyson went their separate professional ways. The HALL OF FANTASY aired again in 1949 when, by pure coincidence, Thorne and Greyson were working at WGN in Chicago. This reunion led to their reviving the series. This time, the series featured stories involving struggles against the supernatural where man was usually the loser, specializing in shock endings. This series consisted of 112 shows and aired locally on radio station WGN, Chicago. The series started on Saturdays at 2:30 PM but after 21 shows, moved to Mondays at 9:00 PM. Later, it moved to 9:30 PM. On August 22, 1952, THE HALL OF FANTASY went nationwide, over Mutual stations. It started as a mini-series of six shows over WGN, Chicago and other Mutual stations on the East Coast. The shows were heard on Fridays, from 8:30 to 9:00 PM. The mini-series of 1952 led into a regular series of 39 shows in 1953, airing on WGN from Jan. 5, 1953 to Sept. 28, 1953, Monday evenings at 7:30 PM. Richard Thorne wrote original stories or adapted classic works of horror for the shows. He was also involved in production and played many of the lead character roles. Eloise Kummer played many of the female leads. Richard Thorne and Leroy Olliger directed the series. Original music was by Harold Turner. Shows from the 1952 and 1953 series were selected for syndication after the end of the 1953 series. The syndicated shows were re- broadcast during the 1970's OTR revival, possibly 1979. Only 26 of the original shows were believed to be aired, possibly the entire syndicatation. It is believed that "He Who Follows Me" was retitled "Steps That Follow Me" for the revival. "The Hangman's Rope" was re- produced for the 70's series, since the original did not survive. In 1993, Mr. Thorne directed some classic horror tales for cassette distribution, "Tales by Edgar Allen Poe" (4 dramas) and "Classic Ghost Stories" (4 dramas). Log Comments: Originally, this log was based on vendor and club catalogs. Later, I added information from three other logs by the late Ray Stanich, Jay Hickerson and Jerry Haendiges. Keith Smith, who has been in contact with Mr. Thorne, sent me Mr. Thorne's own log, incorporated here. His log had shows from the previously unknown 1949-1952 series and much more new information. I've also used some information from Keith's research, especially from the Chicago Tribune. Some of the questions still to be answered: 1. How many shows were actually in the 1947 run? 2. If syndication disks exist, what does the label say? Title? Program Number? 3. Are "The Castle of La Voca" and "Legend of Drago" the same? (See note for 1st show of 1952 run). 4. Are "The Shadow People" and "Creatures in the Shadows" the same? (1953 run). Jerry Haendiges' log had a separate listing for the syndication. I've included a "Syn" column, containing the syndication numbers from Jerry's log. For example, "The Dance of the Devil Dolls" was first in his syndication list. Therefore, the entry in the Syn column is 01. The Num column contains script numbers from Mr. Thorne's log. It does NOT show broadcast numbers. The last column, "Avail", indicates of the show is known to be in circulation and available to collectors. Separate syndication and alphabetical listings follow the chronological log. Date format in the alphabetical list is year-month-day. He also verified, through the Chicago Tribune, that Hall Of Fantasy aired from 8-22-52 through 9-26-52 at 8:30 CST (9:30 EST) on WGN (Mutual on the East Coast). In Variety (Aug. 27, 1952), he found a review of "Castle of La Voca". The review stated it aired Aug. 22, 1952, was the first show broadcast on the East Coast and the show had been broadcasting for 2.5 years locally on WGN. He send the Jan. 21, 1953 review of the time machine story plot (show #2 of 1953 series) and other information. * David J. Johnson sent corrected dates for the 1947 series.
