Series Description:

The BBC adapted J.R.R. Tolkien's timeless tale, THE HOBBIT, for radio
in 1968. It aired Sundays on BBC Radio 4 from 8:30 to 9:00 PM, in
eight 30-minute episodes. Each episode was repeated Tuesdays at 3:00
PM. The serial was adapted by Michael Kilgarriff and produced by
John Powell. The BBC's usual artistic handling has created an audio
classic, which is as popular today as when it was first broadcast.

Bilbo Baggins is the hobbit, who lives in his cozy hole in the Shire.
His life is, to his liking, unadverturious. That is, until the wizard
of Gandalf drags him away on a treasure hunt with a troop of rowdy
dwarves. Suddenly, he's thrown into an adventure, encountering
orcs, spiders, trolls and wolves, all of whom are not at all friendly
toward Bilbo. Bilbo must find courage and strength in himself to
survive. The tale leads up to the final confrontation with the
fearful dragon Smaug and he must face the dragon alone.

The Hobbit is available from the BBC in the UK and on the Internet
and can be found in bookstores in the US, distributed by Bantam
Doubleday Dell.
