This western was produced by the same man that produced "Gunsmoke" (Norman Macdonnell) but was a more relaxed and less intense program. . It focused as much or more on atmosphere and mood than it did on action and violence." The producer saw the show as "a monument to ordinary men who lived in extraordinary times" whose enemies were "the rugged, uncharted country, the heat, the cold, disease, boredom, and perhaps last of all, hostile Indians."

Forty episodes were produced. Raymond Burr went from obscurity to stardom the next year when he took the title role in TV as "Perry Mason
